My family and I are huge fans of the film Monsters Inc. It’s impossible not to fall in love with those crazy monsters. They are not scary at all. In fact they make you want to reach into the screen and give them a great big hug.

After we saw Monsters Inc. for the first time we went out and purchased a “Boo” doll as well as a plush Sulley and Mike. :-)

I was excited to hear that the studio was making a prequel to the film, Monsters University. Sometimes sequeals, and prequels, cannot live up the original. None the less I knew I wanted to see the film when it was out in theaters.

We missed the film when it was in theaters but that is OK since the film is now available on Blu-ray/DVD/Digital download.

Monsters University gives fans a look into how Sulley and Mike first met and how they came to be the best scare team Monsters Inc. has ever seen.

Mike was ADORABLE as a little boy. Check out this brief clip of him. Awwww!!!!

Mike Wazowski has always dreamed of being a scarer since seeing them in action on a school field trip to Monsters Inc. His entire life was dedicated to doing well at school so that he would be accepted into Monsters University as well as their prestigious Scare School.

Mike focused on his school work more so than partying and doing what other college students do.

Mike meets Jimmy Sullivan (Sulley) at his first class at Scare School. The Sullivan family are well known at the school. Sulley thinks he’s going to get by on his name alone and not have to apply himself. He’s the opposite of Mike who works hard to get good grades.

After an incident at Scare School both Mike and Sulley are banned from the program. Mike is crushed and Sulley is at a loss because no Sullivan has ever been banned from Scare School.

The only way Mike can get back into the school is to win the Scare Games. The only fraternity that he could join is a band of misfits who are the least scariest monsters at the school. It’s up to Mike it toughen them up and turn them into true scarers. He needs Sulley’s help to do that. Together they team up to turn the monsters of OK (Oozma Kappa) to transform them into scary monsters in order to win the Scare Games.

Will they succeed? Will Mike and Sulley be allowed to return to Scare School? To find out you need to pick up a copy of Monsters University, available where most movies are sold.

I was a bit “iffy” at first because I didn’t think this film could live up to the original. Within the first few minutes I knew this movie was going to be good.

MONSTERS UNIVERSITY

One thing that stood out to me the most was the animation. The buildings on the Monsters University campus were so realistic looking in this film. You would have sworn it was a real place.

It was great to see how Mike and Sulley became friends. It was also fun to see some characters from the original film make a brief appearance like Roz and Waternoose (you’ll see him in a photo at the end of the film). The film also features Randall who originally was friends with Mike but you’ll see why he hates Mike and Sulley during this film.

The same silly humor is found in this film as in the original. Young and old alike will find parts of the film to be laugh out loud funny.

I think this film would have done well as a “stand alone” film too – meaning – I think the film would have done just as well even if it wasn’t a prequel to a popular film.

There are a lot of bonus features that come with the Blu-ray/DVD combo pack.

On the same Blu-ray disc as the film there is a short feature called The Blue Umbrella that was fun to watch. I don’t think I’ll look at inanimate objects the same way again.

THE BLUE UMBRELLA

The remainder of the bonus features are found on it’s own disk. There are plenty of behind the scenes features including a day in the life of the Director of the film on the Pixar lot. There is also a feature about how the movie team invented their own Scare Games.

After watching the bonus features I wish I had a job on the Pixar lot. It looks like a super fun place to work. :-)

Look for Monsters University where ever movies are sold.

In case you missed my post from there other day here are some printables you can download and print out. Simply click on the image (see below).

Did you see Monsters University? If so, what did you think of the film? Feel free to share your thoughts.
